KERROBERT — We opened our time capsule at an event held June 23. It was a great evening of anticipation of what could be inside. The event went well with a few hundred people in attendance, including Rosemary Falk, Member of Parliament for the Battlefords-Lloydminster area and Ken Francis, MLA for Kindersley and surrounding area. There were news outlets from Unity, Kindersley and Saskatoon present for the opening of the capsule. A representative for the StarPhoenix went back and took it upon herself to look through their archives and found an article that was done way back in 1920 for the placing of the corner stone. That article had details of all the delegates who were present, and the article listed all the contents that were placed inside the capsule. In hindsight, I am glad we did not know about this ahead of time, as it would have taken away from the mystique surrounding the event.
It is nice to have that information now as we go through all the items and have an idea ahead of time of what some of the papers are. It is going to take time and great care to separate all the papers as they were stuck together. Once everything is separated, we will have everything ready for display at our museum located in the Cultural Centre building, which was formerly the courthouse. Some things can be seen right now for anyone travelling through Kerrobert that would like to look at the items. Once the new front steps are complete, which should be in the next month or two, we will re-lay the original corner stone with copies of the items we found plus additional items that we will place inside the same copper box inside the corner stone.
The rodeo was back in a big way this year and well attended. I was under the weather so was unable to take in the magnificent event, but everyone else who went had a great time.
The swimming pool is doing well, and I would like to thank the Kerrobert Credit Union for continuing to sponsor free public swims on Sundays. These last few weekends were so hot, and many people took advantage of the free swim to help cool off.
Road construction crews are still hard at work trying to get all the new curbing, swales and some new sidewalks in place. Once again, when this portion of the project is completed, we will see new pavement being put down. This should happen in of August. Town crews are hard at work cutting grass, painting curbs and soon to be filling potholes and street sweeping. Due to some heavy downpours, some streets are looking to be in poor shape, so a good sweep will clean them up and have them looking good again. One of the biggest challenges for staff is keeping weeds under control. We are getting overrun with weeds due to the moisture we have been getting. We want the moisture, but sometimes that brings more work, however the guys are working hard to stay on top of it.
