KERROBERT – Kerrobert Curling Club is inviting residents to experience curling in a glowing atmosphere.
The club has been trying to find ways to draw more people to the sport of curling. Garry McNutt, who is a new technician with the curling rink, has been bringing new and exciting ideas to help the club see more people coming out of the hacks, which included the recent Glow Curling night that was held Feb. 14.
Marli Shepherd, recreation director for the Town of Kerrobert, was immediately on board with the idea.
“There was not a lot to do to convert the curling rink into a glowing atmosphere. We ordered some black lights and UV light decorations to dress up the sheets and we were extremely happy with how it looks,” she said.
The first night of glow curling was at an introductory price of $2 per person, with future events being priced at $5 per person.
“This was something different for the residents in our community and area. We had curlers of all different skill levels come out for the first night,” Shepherd added.
She said some who attended the event had never curled at all, along with some who were knowledgeable in the sport.
“It was wonderful to see how everyone was able to curl together and have some fun,” she said.
The recreation department is working with the curling club to have more glow events before the season is over. There are also plans for training clinics for beginners of all ages which will include some of the great local curling talent that is within the community of Kerrobert.
The club will also be hosting the open curling bonspiel March 8-10, with a steak supper to kick off the weekend-long event.
