UNITY - While Unity Western Days weekend June 3-4 was challenged with several rainfalls June 3, it wasn't enough to stop events and activities.
However, the weekend rain would have saturated the ground enough that when a severe thunderstorm warning was issued in the early morning hours of June 6 and saw more than an inch of rain fall in a short period of time, some mild flooding occurred within the town of Unity.
Residents may have been awakened to loud thunder and intense lightening that accompanied the heavy rainfall. Commuters experienced some flooded streets in lower lying areas of town as storm drains worked hard to deal with the excess water.
Memorial Park and the west end of Keith Wilson Park located at Unity's Parkview Place also experienced flooding.
By 8 a.m. June 6, the rain had stopped but rain was predicted to continue in the forecast for the day.
June 5, Unity was one of the areas put in a tornado watch throughout much of the day.
Rainfall amounts varied in the Press-Herald readership area as some places outside of Wilkie reported 1/4 of an inch with this system while in town Wilkie residents say their gauges were showing 3/4 of an inch. Tramping Lake has seemed to miss much of the spring rainfall reporting only between three and four tenths up to June 5 and gauges in the village showing up to 1/2 inch following the June 6 morning storm.
