Jerel Wood will serve as Wilkie's newest councillor

Wilkie's mayor, council and Wilkie and District Health Foundation will partner with Sask. Health Authority to bring another full-time doctor to Wilkie.

WILKIE — On behalf of  council and staff, I want to take this opportunity to thank our veterans for the sacrifices they have made in protecting us. We acknowledge your courage, heroism and dedication. Please take time to thank past and present members of the Canadian Armed Forces, U.S. Armed Forces or any branches of the military.

Congratulations to Jerel Wood who was elected to town council through acclamation. Council and staff look forward to working with Jerel.

The community was saddened to hear that our long-term doctor, Dr. Kemp, will be retiring at the end of November. Dr. Kemp has served the community since 1986 and deserves a happy and fulfilling retirement. He will be truly missed by the community. The Wilkie Medical Clinic will remain open with Dr. Matta providing care two days a week and town council, the Wilkie and District Health Foundation and the Saskatchewan Health Authority are all working together to bring another full-time doctor to Wilkie.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the Downtown 2nd Avenue Park. Work is completed for this year and the finishing touches will be done in the spring. We look forward to hosting events in the park next year and hope the community takes the opportunity to use the park as well.

The Wilkie Walkers program has started once again at the Saskcan Community Centre Dance Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. There is no charge to attend.

Activities at the Saskcan Community Center are in full swing. The Wilkie Outlaws held their annual hockey camp back in October, which started off a very busy season. We are currently understaffed at the arena but have recently hired a new rink attendant, Daynin Kropf, and we hope to be able to offer more programming such as public skating and shinny in the near future.

Our Danny and the Dusters cabaret is fast approaching on Nov. 19. This is a fundraiser for the new swimming pool, so get your tickets for this fun “Mock Wedding” themed evening.

The fall trade show is coming up on Nov. 26. There will be lots of vendors with a variety of items for sale. Stop in and get your Christmas shopping done early and support our small-town local businesses.
