High school golfers go fore the win at provincials

Avery Volk and Daxon L'Heureux compete at Northern Meadows during SHSAA provincial golf tournament.

UNITY – A short season of fall golf was in full swing for senior high school teams throughout the province. Here at home, teams from Kerrobert Composite and Unity Composite battled it out on the greens at districts on Sept. 17 at the Jackfish Lodge golf course.

Nash Sperle, Ethan Stifter, Caden MacDonald and Daxon L’Heureux represented Unity while Ryland Richmond, Drake Seversen, Avery Volk and Ryker Seversen represented Kerrobert at the BattleWest Districts. Although the predicted weather would have been less than desirable, organizers stayed on course in hosting the event.

“They made an excellent decision. The weather was perfect for fall golf – sunny and crisp. The wind was not a factor and did not rain until after the boys were off the course,” said UCHS golf coach Kyla Snell.

While the aerated greens made it difficult for the eight young men to play a personal best, two players did qualify to continue at the provincial level.

Volk and L’Heureux then traveled to Northern Meadows Golf Course near Spiritwood for the SHSAA provincial golf tournament.

“I’ve played Northern Meadows many times. Each summer my family and friends will go up and play the course,” said Volk.

This was also not the first time Volk has played at the provincial level as he attended the tournament last year in Elbow.

With 60 male participants at the provincial level, Volk finished 33rd and L’Heureux took 40th place.

While both teens felt they could have done better, their coaches were there to remind them that they did well getting to the level they did.
