UNITY — St. Peter’s School has big plans to include all students in the enjoyment of the outdoors.
Currently, none of the playground equipment that adorns the school field is not accessible for everyone. One student, who is in a wheelchair, is only able to watch their peers enjoy all that is available. The school recognized the need and started making a plan.
Principal Deanna Edmond says after researching all the options that were available in Canada, the school has set their sights on a wheelchair-accessible swing model from MAKR / Jambette. The cost of the new swing with installation will be close to $30,000.
Fundraising has started, and local businesses have been contacted for donations, along with various grant options that the school is pursuing.
Currently, the school has received $4,500 in donations from Delta Co-op, the Catholic Women’s League and a private individual donor.
“With the addition of this swing set, all students of varying abilities would be given opportunities to participate in playground play,” Edmond says.
“This is an experience we want all children to be able to feel.”
