Four STARS landings among UFD's 11 August calls

Communities rely on volunteer fire departments to be trained and ready when the alarm bell rings, including assisting with STARS air ambulance landings

UNITY — August was a busy month for the Unity Volunteer Fire Department.

“We responded to four STARS landings, two of which were in rural settings for farming accidents,” Fire Chief Dwaine Kopp says.

The remaining calls involved two motor vehicle collisions, two EMS assists and UFD also responded to two false alarms for security systems.

The team at UFD also assisted RCMP when a person became stuck inside the post office in the evening while they were getting their mail, as the automatic door locks happened to engage just after they entered the building.

For future reference, there is a sign by the west door that tells people what to do if such an incident occurs.

August was hardly over when UFD reported on their social media page that they had already responded to a baler fire and a grass/field fire.

Fire departments across the province are reminding residents it is dry and continued year-round cautions are necessary to prevent wildfires.
