LUSELAND – The Luseland Arts Council is excited to bring the classical music duo, the Prairie Sons, to the community, March 12.
The duo, comprised of cellist David Liam Roberts and pianist Godwin Friesen, draws inspiration from the Prairie provinces they hail from. Sharing a deep connection to their Prairie roots, the duo have both been awarded and featured in CBC’s Hot 30 Classical Musicians Under 30.
Roberts is a Metis Canadian cellist from Winnipeg, Man. He currently holds a bachelor of art Diploma from the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Ont., where Roberts studied under Hans Jørgen Jensen and Andres Díaz. He is currently pursuing his master’s at the Basel Academy of Music in Switzerland, studying under the acclaimed cellist, Danjulo Ishizaka. He currently plays on a cello that was crafted in Milan by Carlo Antonio Monzino VI in 1928, loaned to him by CANIMEX, inc.
Friesen, a pianist from Saskatoon, got his musical start at an early age, touring with his parents and five siblings in the Friesen Family Band. Although he played various instruments while playing in the family’s band, he began formal piano studies at the age of seven. Friesen also has a BA diploma from Glenn Gould School, studying with John O’Conor. He is also pursuing a master’s degree at Université de Montréal under Jean Saulnier and Henry Kramer.
The Prairie Sons’ energy and innovation offer a fresh perspective on their homeland, inviting you to see the everyday as a miracle in the picturesque Canadian landscape, a show for all ages to enjoy.
