Countdown begins for 30th bunnock anniversary

An annual tradition serves a family atmosphere and creates a massive homecoming that provides economic spinoff for the town of Macklin each August long weekend, which is now planning for its 30th anniversary.

MACKLIN — It may be hard to believe Macklin is already in preparations for the 30th anniversary of their annual World Championship Bunnock Tournament upcoming in 2024.

The tradition of the August long weekend that began in 1993 was halted in 2020 and 2021 due to pandemic-prescribed restrictions. Bunnock continues to grow not only with this event but has grown the popularity of the game of bones itself in surrounding communities and throughout the province.

Town of Macklin CAO Kim Gartner, a longtime organizer, committee member and volunteer at the event said the tournament saw 264 teams registered for the 2023 tournament.

“The weekend included fantastic weather and fantastic crowds,” says Gartner.

Community members, surrounding towns and visitors flock to Macklin to either participate on a team or take in the tournament and the many activities that accompany the weekend’s event.

Gartner said while it is difficult to ascertain the number of volunteers each year, the committee estimates at least 1,000 as every aspect of the weekend operates as a volunteer event and they account for even the smallest amount of donated time.

“On an annual basis, approximately $500,000 will travel through the local community directly related to tournament expenses and revenues. This does not take into account fuel, confectionary, private alcohol purchases.”

Gartner said the oldest participant was 89 while the youngest was six. The committee doesn’t record where people come from each year, but registration sheets do include that information.

“It was another fabulous event that seems to flow very smoothly.  Macklin bunnock weekend offers a family atmosphere that also serves as a massive homecoming event each year,” adds Gartner.

Plans have already begun for a special 30th-anniversary tournament next year.
