Canadian Powerlifting championship includes Unity athlete

Unity athlete, Shauna Hammer, credits her gym community and coworkers for support and encouragement in her powerlifting endeavours

UNITY Shauna Hammer, a member of Fitness Lair of Unity, made her third trip to the Canadian Powerlifting Union National Championship, representing Saskatchewan May 9, held in St. John’s, Nfld.

She began competing in this event in 2016.

Hammer had previously qualified for national events in March of 2022 in Winnipeg, mere days before the pandemic lockdown. She had a missed an entire year of events but says she is excited to be back in the swing of competition.

Hammer tells the Press-Herald / SASKTODAY.ca, “It was my best performance ever, squat 110 kilograms (242 pounds), bench press 62.5 kg (137lb) and deadlift 125kg (275lb). I came in fourth place on the Canadian platform. Each of my best lifts, as well as my total for the day of 297.5 kg are new Saskatchewan (provincial) records in my age/class - M1/57kg.”

The Unity athlete continues to train remotely under the guidance of coach, Dr. Marc Morris. Ian Seguin of Ont. was Hammer’s game-day meet coach.

“I train out of Fitness Lair in Unity where I am a crossfit coach and member. The local gym community, as well as my coworkers at Unity Credit Union, have been tremendously supportive of my lifting endeavours, as have friends and family. Their encouragement is deeply appreciated.”

While attending her competition there, Hammer said the sights and hospitality of St. John’s were wonderful.

Hammer will compete at provincials in October and Western Canadians in September as her next opportunities to compete in her sport.

“I'm looking forward to putting in a demanding block of training to continue building my strength and set me up for new personal bests in the fall.”
