Arena renovations 98 per cent complete, rec. dept. ready for winter

Unity's Community Centre arena has had glowing reviews from its new look as a result of ongoing interior and exterior renovations.

UNITY ‑ Summer recreation activity had a great season including a number of big ball events hosted in Unity, which were a welcome change to the previous year's COVID-19 restricted environment.

Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre ran problem-free for an entire season thanks to Unity’s Recreation Department and lifeguard team.

Renovations to the interior and exterior at the Unity Community Centre is now 98 per cent complete. New signage was erected in October capping off the exterior appearance. Rave reviews on the appearance and changes have been continual as residents and rink users now see the work that been ongoing throughout the summer.

“We are waiting on a couple of back ordered items: heaters for the entrance, a second walk through sliding door, light fixtures and a few loose ends to complete the process,” says Parks and Recreation Director Nicole Headrick.

Headrick tells the Press-Herald/SASKTODAY.ca that the renovation tender was just over $1.2 million, which also included upgrades to the ice plant piping systems and groundwork to the parking lot.

Hockey, skating, and curling have all started their seasons. The indoor walking program has restarted as of Nov. 1 and is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., unless the hall is booked. Users are reminded to bring clean shoes to wear indoors as well as masking is mandatory and all government guidelines must be followed.

Of course, after last year’s big bat colony story broke, people have been wondering about the bats that were relocated.

“We had a volunteer out in October to swab the bat boxes we erected and there was evidence the boxes were being lived in prior to the cold snap," Headrick says.

Nov. 8 week the outdoor rink boards are slated to be put up by town staff and volunteers from the community. Ice installation is weather dependent. Richardson Outdoor Recreation Park offers year-round options for sports enthusiasts.
