Tears of remembrance trump forgetting

Do you remember? Do you remember the places and people you loved as a child? I don't ever want to forget and there are times the scents and images of my past are strong and times when I grasp for any hint of memory.

Do you remember? Do you remember the places and people you loved as a child? I don't ever want to forget and there are times the scents and images of my past are strong and times when I grasp for any hint of memory.

This time of year is always hard for me and, as the light fades and the season changes, I am often overcome with sadness made worse by the sense of loss of a summer, that may or may not even have happened.

Late October and November lend a somber tone to the year and even celebrating Halloween, one of my favourite days, has a serious side. The plastic graves and silly skull masks remind me of the real and remind me to share stories with my children about people I don't want them to forget either.

This year in my quest for ideas for costumes and face designs, I did some research about other cultures and began to focus on the Mexican Day of the Dead. It inspired my costume and encouraged me to reflect even more deeply on the people I've lost.

In my faith tradition, I have acknowledged All Souls' Day and have spent the month of November remembering those who have died in a more concrete way by writing their names in a book of remembrance. I take time to replay in my mind the memories and share the stories I know.

The crosses at the roadside don't just remind me to slow down on the sharp curves and busy corners, but also of the faces and the talents of the people I've know who have perished on the road.

This week I'll wear a poppy and attend a Remembrance Day service. We'll be traveling in the United States for the days leading up to the holiday and my bright red pin will be recognized by many. It will give me an opportunity to show my support for the soldiers we have lost and I'm sure I will be given a chance to answer some questions and share the story of why we wear the poppy with those who may never have heard it.

This month I will remember and even though there will be times when a television commercial will probably bring tears to my eyes, I know I would rather have tears and remember than to ever forget.
