Linda's Lines: Kindness makes a difference to those hurting
Woman with cane
As we, as individuals and nations, continue to struggle with these extraordinary times, let's make kindness as ordinary as possible.

This week’s offering definitely isn’t something extraordinary or spectacular; in fact, it’s extremely every day. Be that as it may, things I’ve experienced this week have moved my heart and encouraged my struggling emotions (and who isn’t struggling these days?). I assume that by the time you’ve finished reading this you’ll be quick to nod your head in agreement. Here goes.

Like literally hundreds of others in this country, my long-awaited surgery remains on the postponed list. Weeks and months have gone by and I anticipate a lot more will do the same. Along with the knee pain, I’m doing a lot of limping and groaning as I get in and out of our vehicle. Fortunately I’m able to drive with no problem.

This morning as my sister-in-law and I proceeded to get out of the car at our favourite “tea” spot, two older gentlemen noticed my maneuvers, came to the car door and offered to help me out. Once I was out and the car was locked, I realized my mandatory mask was still inside. “No problem,” one announced as he handed me one from a brand-new package.

Over this past week I’ve had doors opened when entering the bank, the grocery store and even the mall itself. I’ve received smiles and greetings from “I have no idea who” and even have had someone in the grocery lineup offer to let me go ahead when my cart wasn’t nearly as full as theirs.

As we, as individuals and nations, continue to struggle with these extraordinary times, let's make kindness as ordinary as possible. It makes a difference to a hurting person when someone goes out of his or her way to show consideration; be it from people of all ages, from youth to elders.

“ ... Show kindness and mercy to one another.” (Zechariah 7:9)
