LANGLEY Herbert "Ian" of Burnaby, British Columbia, passed away April 15, 2012 in his 92nd year. Ian died from cancer after a long illness. Ian was born on a farm near Speers, Saskatchewan, to Herbert and Sarah Langley. After graduation, he trained as a wireless operator in Vancouver and joined the war effort as a member of the Merchant Marine transiting the Atlantic. Following World War II, Ian attended the University of Saskatchewan where he trained in agricultural engineering and began a long and fruitful career, first with PFRA and later as a civil engineer building and maintaining the navigable waterways of the lower Fraser from "Hope to Sandheads." Ever the inventor, he could usually be found in his shop repairing a worn appliance, improving upon windmill design or designing a butcher-block table/clamp for a handicapped relative. Throughout his adult life, Ian spent much time at the farm in Saskatchewan, visiting his brother Bill Langley and enjoying time with family and friends. He was usually endeavoring to build, repair or invent something. Ian was ever polite, un-assuming, well loved by all and had a special affinity for each of the many dogs he had throughout his life. He is survived by Florence, his wife of fifty-four years and their son Jim, his sisters Helen Moore and Jean Snell, his sister-in-law Helen Langley, and his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ian was predeceased by his brother Bill. A memorial celebration will be held on May 12, 2012, in Vancouver.
