DOVE: Mamie Evelyn (January 19, 1925 - March 7, 2013) Mamie was born to William and Hildred Bedard (Lucey) at St. Brieux, Saskatchewan. Hildred passed away when Mamie was still a baby. William asked his wife's sister and brother-in-law, Mamie and Elmer Romine, of Meskanaw, SK to be Marie's foster parents. In time, William remarried and Mamie gained three half-brothers and six half-sisters. She herself remained with her foster parents. After graduating from High School in 1943, Mamie enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and stationed at Dafoe, Sask. Here she met the man of her dreams, Stanley. Mamie was honourably discharged on January 24, 1946 and returned home to Meskanaw, with a Canadian Volunteer Service medal. On May 11, 1946, Mamie married Stanley Dove and moved to the family farm at Speers, SK. There, they raised three children, Elmer, born September 17, 1950, Donald, born, January 23, 1952 and Gary, born, July 21, 1954. She found time to curl and square dance with friends. She knitted socks, mitts and slippers, crocheted doilies and afghans, sewed t-shirts for the boys, dresses, pants and blouses for herself. She did liquid embroidery, ceramics and tissue fibre flowers for many weddings. She was famous for her Sunday, home-grown chicken dinners. In the spring of 1988, her beloved husband of 42 years passed away suddenly. Her life changed dramatically. Although she continued to be part of the farming operation helping Don, she started volunteering. She canvassed the community for Cancer, judged Legion Poster competition, sponsored a child in a third world country and concentrated more on her family ties with her many half-sisters and brothers. Mamie began painting pictures. Some of her paintings were donated to fund raisers, some sold and many given as gifts, each one professionally framed. Mamie continued to travel well into her 70s. She went to Australia and China. She was on cruises to Alaska, Caribbean, Panama Canal and Mediterranean. She enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially curling, but now there was an interest in cooking shows and the "Shopping Channel". If Mom thought we girls could use it, we got it. If she thought that the grandchildren needed it, they got it too. It was the joy of giving that had her hooked. In 2005 she made the decision to move to "Oasis Personal Care Homes" in Speers. In 2010, she received a life membership in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 116. She is lovingly remembered by her sons: Elmer (Lillian), Donald, Gary (Bonnie), her grandchildren: Curtis, Darren, Crystal, Ryan (Melissa), Dustin, Brittany (Shelby), Raylene (Brock, her great-grandchildren: Tianna, Aiden, her family and friends. Funeral Service was held March 23, 2013 at Speers United Church with Rev. Gayle Wensley officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Battlefords Funeral Service were in charge of arrangements. ____________________________________________________
