The North Battleford Comprehensive High School senior Vikings head into the final week of the regular season after earning their first win in Saskatoon.
The Vikings were up against the Mount Royal Mustangs Thursday and grabbed an early lead, which they didn't relinquish the entire game.
Running back Cole Tenetuik rushed in from the three-yard line, but the convert was no good for the first scoring play of the game.
Tenetuik was at it again later in the first quarter. This time he ran in a 12-yard touchdown and Dylan Chadwick nailed the convert making it a 13-0 game at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the teams traded field goals, as Chadwick hit from 17 yards out and Joe Marshall hit for the Mustangs from 22 yards out making it 16-3 at half time.
In the third quarter, the Vikings connected on a 31-yard passing play to score a touchdown and increase their lead. Chadwick's convert attempt was good once again and the Vikings led 23-3 heading into the final 12 minutes.
Mount Royal put up the first points of the third quarter as the Vikings' punter was forced to conceive a safety.
Later in the fourth quarter, Tenetuik punched in his third touchdown of the game with a 10-yard run to the endzone. Chadwick was good again and the final score was 30-5.
The Vikings moved into a tie for fifth place with Bedford Road, the team they will host in the final week of the regular season.
The Vikings' running game was dominate Thursday, as Tenetuik had 15 carries for 109 yards and three touchdowns and Wade Frenchman had 16 carries for 137 yards.
"Cole is running real hard and Wade Frenchman had a ton of yards, but the biggest thing is the o-line is creating enormous holes for these guys," said Vikings coach Jamie Summerfeld. "I knew we were going to have a pretty good o-line going into the season, but I think they have just realized themselves that they can actually start pushing around some guys and that is the key to our run game right now."
Lyle Stepanic had the longest reception, which he scored a touchdown on. Omelchenko passed for 38 yards on the day, as the Vikings picked up a total of 358 yards and 21 first downs compared to the Mustangs' 132 yards and six first downs.
"We have been looking forward to that one for five games," said Sommerfeld. "The young team here has been coming out every week and have been working so hard it is nice to see the pieces come together."
The Vikings' defence was led by Sheldon Schick, who led the team in tackles and Sommerfeld credited the offence with moving the sticks and being on the field the majority of the game as a big boost to the defence.
The final week of 3A football will be important for more than just the Vikings, as Bishop James Mahoney and Marion Graham both put their undefeated records on the line and play for the first round bye.
Evan Hardy has locked up third place. Tommy Douglas has two wins, but if Bedford Road beats the Vikings this week and Tommy Douglas loses their final game they can be caught by Bedford Road.
The Vikings have a chance to move in sole possession of fifth place with a win and avoid a team with a winning record in the first round. In the cellar is Mount Royal who be looking for their first win.
The Vikings' final home game of the season goes Thursday at Beaver Lions Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
"It is going to be a very exciting game, it is our last regular season game," said Sommerfeld adding "It should be another win for us, it should be another very big game for us and for Bedford. We will be stressing the importance of going out and not taking this lightly."
