The Battlefords Midget Stars appear to be on the cusp of being a playoff contender in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League, but they are still searching for a more consistency before they can take the next step.
The Stars were in Swift Current on the weekend, and although their record was better than Swift Current's, they knew they'd have to work hard and play two complete games to earn two wins. After the final buzzer sounded Sunday, the Stars left with a split and their first road win of the season.
Saturday, Zack Klebaum started the scoring five minutes in with Regan Yew and Ryan Suchorab drawing the assists on the only goal of the first period.
Swift Current came out strong in the second period, as Daylan Gatzke, Dayton Reinboldt, Cody McKinnon and Zac Mackay all scored for the Legionnaires.
Yew responded for the Stars with a late goal in the second from Colby Cave, but after two periods the Stars trailed 4-2.
Mackay scored again for Swift Current in the third period and, a shorthanded goal into the empty net by Craig Fournier sealed the Legionnaires' 6-2 victory.
Blair Mahon took the loss after facing 37 shots.
Sunday, Dylan Fluter had strong third period and catapulted the Stars to the 5-3 win.
In the first, McKinnon put Swift Current ahead, but two minutes later Robin Yew scored on a powerplay from Blake Young and Klebaum.
In the final minute of the first period, Colby Daniels scored a powerplay marker putting the Stars in front. Regan Yew and Dillon Forbes had the helpers.
Swift Current tied the game midway through the second period and the score was 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Jesse Gerbig scored just over a minute into the third to put the Stars back in the lead.
Shortly after the go-ahead goal, Fluter scored from Daniels and goalie Regan Santoro to take the two-goal lead.
Alex Laird scored a powerplay goal for Swift Current shortly after, but Fluter scored a powerplay goal late in the third to give the Stars enough insurance for the 5-3 win.
Fluter's second of the game was assisted by Klebaum and Daniels.
Santoro made 40 saves for the win, as the Stars moved to 5-10-1-0.
The Stars head back on the road this weekend, as they will be in Wilcox to take on the 8-5-2-0 Notre Dame Argos.
