It is merely pre-season, but already the Battlefords Midget Stars are getting a taste of winning.
The Stars hosted the Saskatoon Blazers Thursday night at the Civic Centre and pulled out a 2-1 victory, but lost in Saskatoon to the Blazers 6-1 Sunday to make their record 2-1-0-1 in exhibition.
In Thursday's action, the lone goal of the first period came four minutes in off the stick of Justin Lund. Colby Daniels skated from the corner and fired a shot at Daniel Wapple. He kicked the rebound onto Lund's stick and he fired it into the open net. Cody Thiel also drew an assist on the play.
The game's next goal was scored with two minutes left in the second period on the powerplay. This time Dylan Fluter scored from Daniels and Robin Yew.
The Blazers scored once in the third period, as Jesse Roden scored from Justin Schoffer.
In the end, Blair Mahon was solid for the Stars making 24 saves. The Blazers' goalies split time with Wapple giving up one goal on 17 shots and Cody Secord giving up one goal on 15 shots.
The Stars were 1/7 on the powerplay while the Blazers were 1/9. Daniels was credited with the Stars' player of the game honour.
In the Sunday evening tilt in Saskatoon, the Stars picked up where they left off, but unfortunately didn't finish that way. The Stars scored the games first goal a minute into the game on the powerplay. Eric Pfeifer scored from Ryne Keller and Dallan Walker.
The Blazers answered back with three goals of their own in the first, one of which was scored on the powerplay.
Saskatoon added three more goals, another with the man advantage, in the second period and the game ended 6-1.
Tyler Cockburn who dressed as the Battlefords North Stars backup Saturday night, was in net to start for the Midget Stars Sunday. He allowed six goals on 20 shots. Regan Santoro played the final period and stopped all six shots he faced.
Next for the Stars is their final exhibition game Wednesday at home against the Saskatoon Contacts.
