It's volleyball season in the region and Maidstone was once again the hub of activity. Sr. Mega-Volley, the massive volleyball tournament hosted by Maidstone High School every September began Thursday and finished up at 11:28 p.m. Saturday night.

"There was a lot of strength on both sides, lots of strong boys' teams and lots of strong girls' teams," said one of Maidstone's coaches and organizers Dave Speirs.

Speirs expressed appreciation to the parents, volunteers and staff who give so much time to make the event a success every year.

The Maidstone teams are strong this season - the boys have been winning tournaments throughout the region and were hopeful going into their home tournament. They played strong, but found themselves beat by the team championship team.

Both girls' teams were also looking strong coming into the tournament. The A team was missing a few starters who were away at leadership opportunities over the weekend, but one of the girls brought some new energy to the team as she rejoined them after placing fourth in provincial golf in Humboldt. The B team played hard and improved steadily throughout the weekend and for some they got their first taste of what the senior Mega-Volley tourney is all about.

In boys' play the championship game came down to Glaslyn and Englefeld with Glaslyn winning the tournament. The consolation final was won by Neilburg.

The girls' final game was played between Cut Knife and Goodsoil. Cut Knife won the tournament for the fifth straight year. Maidstone's girls' senior A team won the consolation pool.

This weekend again Maidstone will be flooded with volleyball players as the junior Mega-Volley tournament will be held with lots of opportunities to watch the action and cheer on the home teams.

The senior boys have just received notice they will be hosting provincials this fall Nov. 26 and 27 while the girls are preparing to host provincials in 2011. Maidstone can be described in many ways, 'volleyball town' is a fitting nickname at this time of year.
