Although there were no North Battleford teams playing, two regional soccer playoffs took place in North Battleford, and local area teams advanced to provincials.
In the seven versus seven boys' playoffs Cando earned regional gold.
Cando played Langham in the semi final match Saturday morning and made it look easy with a 13-2 win. Cando sat some of their stronger players for most of the game, but were able to pick up the convincing win.
Cando went up against Se Se Wa Hum, who beat Maymont 13-0 in the second semi final match.
Cando gave up the game's first goal, but responded after a nice chip pass creating a good scoring chance, which tied the game. Late in the game, with the score tied 4-4 Cando scored to take the lead and held on for the regional title.
Both Cando and Se Se Wa Hum will join Muenster and Rosthern Junior College in Rosthern for the provincial championships this weekend.
Muenster is the defending champion, but Cando enters the tournament after winning 18 of 19 games this season. Nearly half of those games were played in a higher level of 11 versus 11 games.
The other host team on the weekend was Chief Poundmaker and they too will be advancing to provincials at the 1A boys' level.
Poundmaker edged Middle Lake 3-2 in semi final action to clinch a spot at provincials. In the final, Osler V.C.A. won 5-3. Both finalists will be at provincials in Lake Lenore Friday and Saturday.
One other Northwest soccer team is also heading to provincials. The Cando seven versus seven girls team will be in Outlook after being one of only four teams entered in their level of competition and earning a bye to provincials.
The John Paul II 2A boys' team played in the regional tournament in Humboldt and were beat 7-1 by Evan Hardy of Saskatoon eliminating them from competition in their first game.
The John Paul II girls' team was in Warman for regional playoffs and lost 3-0 to Delisle to be eliminated in the quarter-final round.
