A one-day local basketball tournament saw four teams from the Humboldt region compete.
Teams from Watrous, Middle Lake, and Lake Lenore were at Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) on January 15 to compete in a senior boys' basketball tournament.
According to Brian Hinz, the HCI coach/manager, all the games were very close.
"There was very good competition between the teams," he said.
HCI won the tournament, but it wasn't easy.
"It was actually a tie between HCI, Watrous, and Lake Lenore because we each only had one loss," Hinz explained. "So it went to points and we won because we had the best plus/minus."
Each team had three games in the tournament.
Watrous defeated Middle Lake 53-46 in the first game. HCI then defeated Lake Lenore 44-37 and Middle Lake 83-69 in back-to-back games.
Watrous lost to the Lake Lenore Lancers 44-37, then the Lancers defeated Middle Lake 68-61.
The last game of the day, Watrous versus HCI, was the closest and arguably one of the most intense.
"Each side only had six players each," Hinz explained. "We were missing a couple for hockey and a couple were injured."
The game turned into an endurance match between the teams, with players who hadn't seen as much court time getting a chance to show their stuff.
Watrous won the game by two points, 41-39.
