Broncos fall prey to Wolves

The Broncos went three for three last week - three losses that is. The Humboldt Broncos played host to the LaRonge Ice Wolves on January 7, their second match up in the week, but the first on home ice.

The Broncos went three for three last week - three losses that is.
The Humboldt Broncos played host to the LaRonge Ice Wolves on January 7, their second match up in the week, but the first on home ice.
But, once again, the Ice Wolves proved too much for the Broncos, taking a 5-3 victory back to LaRonge.
The Broncos ran into trouble in the first period. Despite having six men on the ice, for part of the period, it looked like LaRonge had a power play as they controlled the puck in the Humboldt end.
The Ice Wolves persistence paid off, as Graham Smerek batted a loose puck out of the air and into the Bronco net at 7:15 of the first.
The Broncos tied the game just 17 seconds into the second period. With Humboldt on the power play, Josh Roach, assisted by Greg Ferguson, made it a 1-1 game.
LaRonge took back their lead with a goal by Justin Ducharme at 13:36.
Ice Wolf Travis Eggum made it a 3-1 lead with a goal at 18:22.
Humboldt's Ward Szucki reduced the lead to one with a goal at 19:32. Chase Wharton and goalie Matt Hrynkiw were credited with the assists.
With the score 3-2, things got a little rough in the third period, but the teams also managed to score a bit.


The Broncos managed to tie the game at three with a goal by Troy Gasper at 2:33 of the period. Ferguson and Brett Pisio got the assists.
LaRonge's Smerek got his second goal and eventual winner, at 3:25.
Marc Andre Carre made it 5-3 for the Wolves with a goal at 9:42.
With just over a minute left in the game, some major penalties were handed out.
LaRonge's Robert Monfore received two minutes for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct at 18:53.
At 19:59, Smerek got handed a five minute major for fighting, a 10-minute misconduct, and a game misconduct.
At the same time, the Broncos' Troy Gasper received a five-minute major for fighting and a game misconduct, while Pisio received a 10-minute misconduct.
The Broncos outshot LaRonge 28-19.
