The Battlefords AAA Sharks put up a good fight Saturday and Sunday when they hosted Regina, but they suffered two 3-1 losses in their first action at the Battleford Arena this season.

It was a tough and somewhat upsetting weekend for the Battlefords Sharks in AAA female midget action against the Regina Rebels.

The Rebels came in and swept the two games at Battleford Arena, both by counts of 3-1.

The first game Saturday night got off to a grim start for the Sharks. Literally seconds into the game, the Rebels swarmed around goaltender Jacy Akre with Brooklyn Moskowy putting the puck into the net at the 20-second mark with Paige Anakaer assisting.

It stayed that way until there was 5:46 left in period one, when Jenna Carpenter-Boesch put one past Akre again, with Teah Anderson and Nicole Mitchell assisting. The score was 2-0 after one.

In the second, the Sharks got one back as Jamie Fedler scored unassisted midway through the period, to notch the only goal of the period.

In the third, Regina's Shalyn Cowan restored the two-goal cushion unassisted with 7:50 remaining, for a 3-1 final score. Cowan was named player of the game for the Rebels while Akre was named player of the game for the Sharks, facing the Rebels' onslaught.

The second game was Friday afternoon and it proved to be more of the same, although the Sharks did give their fans some hope of a different result after they ended the first period tied at 1-1. Amanda Grainger had scored for the Battlefords while Carpenter-Boesch scored for Regina.

In the second, Madison Merritt scored from Nicole Mitchell to make it 2-1, while Shalyn Cowan scored unassisted in the third period to make it a 3-1 final score. The third period was penalty-filled as Regina was hit with four minors and the Sharks five in the third period alone.

Rae McClintock got the victory while Akre again took the loss for the Sharks. Shots were 24-17 in favor of Regina.

The back-to-back losses mean the AAA Sharks remain winless three games into the 2010-11 SFMAAAHL season.

The next action for the Sharks is Saturday, as they host another weekend home series against struggling Swift Current, who are coming off an 8-1 loss to Saskatoon on the weekend.
