Two men charged following Sturgeon Lake First Nation shooting

Police located and seized a semi-automatic firearm, ammunition and bear spray.

STURGEON LAKE FIRST NATION - Two men are facing charges following a shooting on Sturgeon Lake First Nation.

On July 8, Prince Albert RCMP received a report of a shooting on the First Nation.

After investigating, police determined two people approached a group of individuals who were walking in the community. An altercation occurred between them. Then, a firearm was discharged, striking a man. Police say he was treated at the hospital for injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Officer immediately began looking for the suspects.

Prince Albert RCMP later obtained a warrant to enter a home on Sturgeon Lake First Nation. On July 14, with help from the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team, two men were arrested at the site without incident.

Police located and seized a semi-automatic firearm, ammunition and bear spray at the home.

Jayden Sutherland, 24, and Thoren Daniels, 19, both from Sturgeon Lake First Nation, are each charged with assault with a weapon; discharge a firearm while being reckless; use a firearm in the commission of an offence; careless use of a firearm; unsafe storage of a firearm; and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Thoren Daniels is also charged with fail to comply with a probation order; and weapons possession contrary to an order.

Both accused were scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court Monday.
