A suspected drug-trafficking incident in Saskatoon last night led Saskatoon Police Service members to deploy a taser during the arrest of a 25-year-old man, who is facing various weapons and drug related charges.
Police say at approximately 4:58 p.m. June 18, members from the Saskatoon Police Service Guns and Gang Unit observed activity consistent with drug traffickingÌýin the 3300 block of Fairlight Drive. Members dealt with the driver of a vehicle and located a loaded sawed-off rifle along with methamphetamine and fentanyl. A 22-year-old man was arrested without incident.
Police say a second individual seen walking away from the vehicle began to run when he saw police. Officers pursued him on foot and were able to locate him attempting to hide in a backyard in the 200 block Fairmont Drive. According to the SPS report, as officers approached, they observed a can of bear mace that had fallen to the ground. The suspect is reported to have reached into his waistband when confronted by police and a conducted electricity weapon was deployed. A 25-year-old man was taken into custody without further incident.
The 22-year-old is facing 13 charges, which include possession for the purpose of trafficking of methamphetamine andÌýfentanyl, possession of a controlled substance, possession of proceeds of crime, breach of release order and possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle, along with numerous other weapons-related offences. He also had a warrant for arrest for robbery.
The 25-year-old man is facing seven charges, which include possession for the purpose of trafficking of methamphetamine and fentanyl, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and breach of a release order.
Both will be seen by a Justice of the Peace June 19.
Police report the incident will be reviewed in accordance with SPS policy.
