SASKATOON — A Saskatoon Police Service routine investigation of a riverside bonfire June 8 turned violent, with two members of the SPS Bike Unit sustaining minor injuries and two people facing assault and other charges.
A 26-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man are facing a number of charges after members of the SPS Bike Unit witnessed smoke coming from an area along the river in the 600 block of Spadina Crescent at around 7 a.m.
The officers located the two individuals sitting at an open fire and stopped to investigate a possible bylaw violation. While being questioned, the two became combative, began physically assaulting the officers and attempted to disarm them, according to SPS.
Police say that after a significant struggle, the two were brought into custody and are now facing charges including four counts of assaulting a peace officer and two counts of attempting to take a weapon. The man is also facing charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of fentanyl and breach of court conditions.
Minor injuries were sustained by the officers.
