Austin Guillemin says he plans to pay off his student loans before he decides what to do with the rest of his windfall.

SASKATOON  — Austin Guillemin was having trouble sleeping on the morning after the June 5 Lotto 6/49 draw, so the Saskatoon local checked the ticket he had purchased on the Lotto Spot app. To his surprise, $1,000,000 flashed on his app screen!

“I was up at 4:30 in the morning and saw there was a million-dollar winner in Saskatoon when I was looking online,” he explained. “So, I figured I might as well check my ticket.”

“I saw the amount and just started pacing around my apartment,” he said, laughing. “I kept going back to the app to make sure my ticket had actually won – I probably opened and closed the ticket 10 to 20 times!”

Guillemin purchased his $15 Lotto 6/49 ticket on the Lotto Spot app. When purchasing a ticket on the app, players will see a “Winner” note on any winning ticket. The player must “open” the ticket to see what prize was won.

Still not convinced that he had won $1 million, Guillemin double-checked his ticket with another phone.

“I was like, ‘How can I make sure?’” he laughed. “I found an old phone, waited for it to charge a bit and then scanned the ticket barcode on that phone – same result!”

Now that he’s convinced, Guillemin said he has started to think of ideas for his windfall.

“The first thing I’m going to do is pay off my student loan,” he said. “After that, I’m going to have to sit and think about it.”

“I hope to buy some of my parents’ land someday,” he continued. “It’s been in our family for a long time, and I want to keep it that way. This will help me to do that.”

Guillemin’s win is the largest prize ever won by a ticket purchased on the Lotto Spot app!
