BATTLEFORD - Sentencing for a man convicted of second-degree murder on Thunderchild First Nation has been adjourned to June 27.
Ivor Wapass was convicted Feb. 12 in connection to the death of Roger Standingwater on Sept. 15, 2018. Sentencing had been scheduled to begin March 2 in Queen's Bench Court in Battleford.
But it was a brief court appearance Wednesday. The adjournment was at the defence's request so that a Gladue report can be prepared by the next court date, which will also be in Battleford Queen's Bench Court. The Gladue report would assess factors in Wapass's background that could mitigate the sentence.
Second-degree murder carries a life sentence, but the main issue facing the judge is to determine how long Wapass must serve before he is eligible for parole, with a range between 10 to 25 years.
