The 2010 Sakicawasihk Powwow was full of colourful talent from across Canada at the Civic Centre, in North Battleford this week. There were dancers from young to old who competed in many different categories. The junior, teen, and adult women have three categories: jingle, traditional and fancy. The junior, teen and adult men danced fancy, grass, traditional and chicken. There were also many older dancers who competed in women's and men's golden age. The jingle dress is known for its beauty, grace and unique sound. The fancy dance is the most popular because it features vivid regalia with dramatic movement, including spins and leaps. The traditional costumes are made of cloth or leather, featuring authentic design and materials. The dancers perform with precise, highly controlled movement. The dance floor was surrounded by drums and singers who took turns making music for each dance. The round dance was a sight to see, when all of the dancers got together and formed a circle with their own style of dance. The powwow, sponsored by Gold Eagle Casino, started July 13 with the grand entry at 1 p.m. and ran until July 14. Dancers were judged and cash prizes were awarded to the best dancers. It was inspiring to see so many young people passionate about dance and their culture.
