RCMP charged three people after a victim was allegedly beaten, tortured and robbed before being dumped in a rural field.
Police made the arrests after an eight-month long investigation following an incident on Oct. 4, 2020, when Fort Qu’Appelle EMS and RCMP responded to a complaint of an injured person in a rural field north of Fort Qu’Appelle.
Police say the victim met three suspects outside of a nightclub in Regina and left in a vehicle with them. The victim was beaten, tortured and robbed. The suspects attempted to access the victim’s bank account. The victim was then taken to a field outside of Fort Qu’Appelle, further beaten and left unconscious. Hours later a passerby saw the victim and called 911. The victim had suffered severe injuries requiring hospital treatment.
Austin Severight, 24, of Yellowquill First Nation was arrested in Tisdale on May 25, 2021, and charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery and choking to overcome resistance.
Sheridan Squirrel, 22, and Jenna Hoffman, 25, both of Wadena, were arrested on Nov. 5, 2020, after a search warrant was executed at a residence in Wadena. They were charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery and choking to overcome resistance.
On March 16, 2021, as part of a plea agreement, Squirrel pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, robbery and forcible confinement. He was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison.
Hoffman remains in custody and appears in Regina Provincial Court on June 17.
Severight made his first court appearance on May 27 and appeared again on June 1. The matter was adjourned to June 3 to give his defence lawyer time to get disclosure.
The investigation was led by the Regina RCMP General Investigation Section and involved the assistance of many RCMP Detachments and RCMP support units,Ìýthe Saskatoon Police Service, and Regina Police Service.
