LUSELAND - On Sept. 28, a public meeting was held at the Luseland hall to discuss the formation of a new community hall board. Turnout wasn’t great but those who did come out brought forward some great fundraising ideas and thoughts regarding the organization of the new hall board and funding framework. The group also made changes to the existing hall rental contract. Councillor Krystal Bazylinski agreed to become the board president and Pothole Productions member Tanis Sibley agreed to be the board secretary. The position of treasurer will be filled at a later meeting set for October.
The Luseland Arena will begin its 2021-22 season around mid-October. Arena manager Terry Reiber reports that ice time bookings are looking promising and that Luseland Minor Hockey has the following teams this year: two to three initiation teams, a novice team, an atoms team and shared practices and games for a joint midget team. There will also be a recreational team but no senior hockey team this season. So far, there are lots of bookings of ice time from Macklin, both of practise and games. The booth will be operated again by local resident Linda McKercher.
The town will be watching public health updates and ensure proper protocols are in place for the arena. The Luseland Community Development Committee is hosting a Mental Health Awareness Workshop on Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 pm. It is being sponsored by the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. To attend, call the town office at 306-372-4218 to register. Sign up is needed by Nov. 2. The workshop will go over the foundations of mental wellness, language essentials, suicide and crisis intervention and self-care and stress management. We have many generous local sponsors who have provided donations for the lunch and nutrition breaks. The workshop will be offered at no cost.
The Town of Luseland is planning a public meeting for Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Due to COVID-19, we were unable to host a public meeting last year. Although we are still dealing with health restrictions and will not be having refreshments after, we hope to see a good turnout. We are having a strategic planning meeting in November and hope to get feedback and comments by local residents on plans for future capital projects. Please be reminded as this is a public meeting that you will be required to show proof of vaccination in order to attend.
The town crew had a couple of fall yard waste pick up days set. They did one on Sept. 29 and another on Oct. 13. We thank residents for taking this opportunity to get yards cleaned up for the season. There is a great deal of community pride in Luseland and it sure shows in the tidiness and local efforts to keep both private and public properties clean.
The Town of Luseland would like to thank Milton Zimmer for the generous donation of a 1,000-gallon water tank to the Luseland Cemetery. This will ensure that watering of trees, shrubs and flowers is made easier as great efforts have been made out there towards enhanced beautification of the cemetery. Thank you also to Councillor Edie Gilles and the many local volunteers who put in significant time and effort to planting and watering at the cemetery this past season.
