MISSINIPE — The dock at the small craft harbour in Missinipe on Otter Lake has been allocated funding for improvements under Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

The funding comes as Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard announces $3.5 million to help renew the harbour infrastructure throughout the Prairies.

Missinipe Harbour is located on the west side of Otter Lake, approximately 317 kilometres north of Prince Albert. The harbour is under the administration of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours Branch.

In April, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada began inviting comments from the public pertaining to a reconstruction proposal that would include demolition of the existing timber wharf, and the construction of a new L-shaped timber crib wharf including new timber wheel-guards and steel bollards.

"Small craft harbours are vital to so many fisheries and entire communities across Canada, including the Prairies,” said Bernadette Jordan, minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, in a statement announcing the funding.

“By investing $300 million to build greener, safer, and more efficient harbours from coast to coast to coast, we're investing in the people who live in those communities, and rely on these harbours every day."

Harbour restoration projects are undertaken in co-operation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users.
