Looking for something to do? Melfort is holding a registration night for sports, recreation, leisure, arts, culture and service clubs.

MELFORT — Sports, recreation, leisure, arts, culture, and service clubs are the types of groups Melfort locals will be able to browse and join at Melfort’s second annual community connection and fall registration night.

Before 2019, the event served exclusively for recreation and sports activities, but Brent Lutz, Melfort’s director of development planning and community relations, said two years ago they changed it to welcome all clubs as well as see if there’s interest in starting some for particular hobbies.

Now, the city is encouraging all active community groups to participate.

“We just saw there was a need for an opportunity for people to find out all the groups and associations that are active in Melfort,” Lutz said. “New people moving to the community often don’t know what’s available and they need to be able to connect with like-minded people with interests they have.”

The event will take place Sept. 1 at on 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

Tables can be booked for free by calling the city at 306-752-7906. Typically, participating groups bring informational pamphlets and have a member on hand to answer any questions community members have.

The event wasn’t held in 2020 due to the pandemic.

If there isn’t a group established for a particular hobby or interest, Lutz said this will be an opportunity to see if that interest exists.

“After spending a year-and-a-half kind of cooped up in our homes many of these groups are looking for new membership and I’m sure that many of the general public are looking at ways to interact and get involved with others. It’s kind of a perfect combination and perfect timing for all of things.”
