A sentencing hearing got underway in North Battleford Provincial Court March 9.

NORTH BATTLEFORD - The sentencing hearing is on in North Battleford for a man who entered a guilty plea to manslaughter in connection to a 2020 death.

Keenan Mirasty is being sentenced in connection to the beating death of Sequin Mooswa, 22, at a residence on St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford on March 8, 2020. The sentencing hearing is being heard this week to settle the facts of what exactly transpired on the night in question.

Mirasty had pled guilty to manslaughter in October 2020 and sentencing submissions took place in August, 2021 with what was believed at the time to be an agreed statement of facts. At that hearing the Crown outlined facts that stated Mooswa had sustained a severe beating from Mirasty in the early morning hours of March 8 in her apartment.

But it became apparent during those submissions that the facts were not agreed to by counsel, particularly on the issue of whether a second beating had taken place inside Mooswa's bedroom. In December, a full sentencing hearing was scheduled by Judge Dan O'Hanlon.

The hearing began Wednesday morning in provincial court before Judge O'Hanlon, with counsel in attendance. Mirasty was in attendance for the proceedings. The hearing had been moved up from May, but was nevertheless pushed back by a day, due to bad weather preventing participants from travelling to the court on Tuesday.

The Crown indicated Wednesday they expect to call four witnesses from the RCMP. Testimony began with a blood-spatter expert and the proceedings were expected to continue throughout the day.
