Man sentenced in Laverdiere murder gets conditional sentence for b&e

Samuel Takakenew was arrested September 2022 and charged with break and enter into a home in North Battleford. At the time he was on probation after being sentenced for accessory in Tiki Laverdiere's murder.

NORTH BATTLEFORD – A man who was given a sentence of time served for his part in Tiki Laverdiere’s murder in 2019 has been given a conditional sentence on a break and enter charge stemming from last year.

On Jan. 6, in North Battleford Provincial Court, 38-year-old Samuel Takakenew was handed a nine-month conditional sentence for break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence and breach of a probation order.

Takakenew first appeared in court in September 2022 and was released on bail Sept. 27, 2022. Judge Kevin Hill had pointed out that the charge was indictable by law. Indictable charges are more serious than summary conviction charges and generally mean jail time.

Takakenew was placed on a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., ordered to perform 100 hours of community service by Aug. 1, not possess any firearms, weapons or ammunition, not consume any alcohol or unprescribed drugs, and participate in addiction assessment and programs if ordered by his probation officer.

In December 2021, Takakenew was sentenced to time served on a charge of accessory to murder in the death of 25-year-old Tiki Laverdiere of Edmonton. At that time he was placed on two years probation.

Takakenew was arrested in Edmonton in August 2020 and charged with accessory to murder in Laverdiere’s death.

Laverdiere, from Edmonton, was reported missing to Battlefords RCMP May 12, 2019. On June 10, 2019, Saskatchewan RCMP announced that Laverdiere’s disappearance was the result of foul play and they would be investigating her disappearance as a homicide. Her body was found July 11, 2019, during an RCMP ground search in a rural area outside of North Battleford.
