LOON LAKE – A Mudie Lake First Nation man was sentenced to jail time for his part in an incident where shots were fired at a home on Island Lake First Nation.
Andrew Opikokew, 22, was given 84 days in jail on a charge of discharging a firearm at a person with intent to wound or endanger life and unauthorized possession of a firearm in a vehicle. He was sentenced in Loon Lake circuit court on Aug. 18, according to the courthouse.
Opikokew was charged after Loon Lake RCMP received a call on Dec. 21, 2021, that a man was injured after bullets were fired at a home on Island Lake First Nation. Police were able to locate the man four hours later in a vehicle in a remote area and due to the snow-covered road police had to take him to a main road for medical attention.
Others charged in this incident included Kirk Crookedneck, Kashtin Lee Sandfly and Harold Mitsuing Jr.
Crookedneck was charged with attempted murder and discharging a firearm in a reckless manner. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm while prohibited and was sentenced in June to 180 days in jail, according to the courthouse.
Sandfly remains in custody and is back in court on Aug. 25.
