A man arrested after a rural traffic stop turned into a multi-agency police emergency response is seeking bail.
Forty-year-old Darren Hildebrand of the R.M. of Canwood allegedly fired a firearm from a residence near a highway where an officer was conducting a traffic stop.
According to RCMP, on Dec. 12, at about 9:45 p.m. an officer from the Big River RCMP detachment conducted a traffic stop on a road south of Debden when he heard what he thought was a firearm being charged in his direction.
The person in the vehicle, which was stopped by police, fled on foot after hearing the gun shot.
The officer immediately drove to the residence where he believed the firearm was discharged and found a man standing outside holding a firearm.
Police officers from Spiritwood, Blaine Lake, Shellbrook and Ahtahkakoop detachments, as we well as a Conservation Officer and the Saskatchewan RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), were called in to assist. They set up a perimeter to secure the residence and maintain public safety.
About three hours later RCMP ERT officers found the man in the backyard of the residence and arrested him. He was charged with discharging a firearm while being reckless, discharging with intent, unsafe storage of firearms, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of pointing a firearm, and resisting arrest.
A woman at the residence was taken to a safe location.
Police searched the residence and seized four more firearms and ammunition.
The Prince Albert RCMP General Investigation Section and Forensic Identification Services Units also assisted with the investigation.
After the incident was over, the person who fled from the traffic stop was found safe at their home and didn’t report any injuries.
Hildebrand made a brief appearance Dec. 14 in Prince Albert Provincial Court and has a show cause hearing scheduled Dec. 16.
