Even though the health care system in this country isn't ready to embrace liberation therapy, there are those throughout the region suffering from MS who are taking the risks, travelling abroad and paying for the treatment themselves.
Friends and family members of Elaine Giles (nee Donovan) are hoping the treatment will help. Giles moved back to the area from Fairview, Alta to be closer to family and has been living in the Maidstone Hospital and Pine Island Lodge for nine years.
Friends and family members have heard positive things about the treatment and Giles is ready to travel to Albany, N.Y. in March for the procedure.
Last week a raffle was held to help Giles. A quilt was made and donated by Frances Wright and an afghan was made and donated by 97-year-old Liona Bone. There was also a gift certificate from Mr. Bill's restaurant. The raffle earned over $2,400 and donations are still coming in.
Supporters, including Giles' sister Anne Reid, will continue to raise funds and have said any money donated that isn't needed by Giles for her treatment will be passed on to someone else in the region who is undergoing the procedure.
Further events are being planned at Pine Island Suites and donations can be made to the Elaine Giles fund at the Maidstone branch of Synergy Credit Union.
