CARROT RIVER, LANIGAN — SaskTel announced it will be expanding its fibre-optic internet service into 24 communities, including Carrot River, Lanigan and Wadena.

In a Dec. 6 media release, SaskTel said it plans to begin construction in these communities next year and expects to have the majority of residents and businesses fibre ready by the end of 2023.

The service expansion is part of the fourth phase of SaskTel’s $100 million Rural Fibre Initiative.

“Through SaskTel’s Rural Fibre Initiative, tens of thousands of rural Saskatchewan families and businesses will gain access to advanced fibre optic broadband infrastructure, enabling them to connect and thrive in the modern world,” said Don Morgan, the minister responsible for SaskTel.

The new service can deliver speeds of up to a gigabit per second, said Doug Burnett, SaskTel’s president.

“Upgrading our network to fibre provides us with a more flexible platform in these communities that can quickly grow to meet customers’ evolving needs.”

The Rural Fibre Initiative was announced in 2020. The third phase included Hudson Bay, Watrous and Wynyard.
