LLOYDMINSTER, Sask. – After months of efforts in Parliament, the CP Rail tax exemption in Saskatchewan has finally been repealed.

Conservative MPs reported the amendment to section 24 the Saskatchewan Act passed successfully in the House of Commons Wednesday.

Rosemarie Falk, Member of Parliament for Battlefords-Lloydminster, had long called for the Saskatchewan Act to be amended.

Falk said the following on Wednesday in a statement following the vote in the Commons:

“Today the House of Commons voted in favour of our Conservative Opposition Day Motion to amend the Saskatchewan Act by repealing CP Rail’s tax exemption in Saskatchewan.

“This was the second time Conservatives have asked the Liberal government to remove this longstanding provision.

“This constitutional change will achieve tax fairness for Saskatchewan on this matter and the success of our motion commits the Government of Canada to it.

“Along with my Conservative colleagues, I look forward to supporting efforts to ensure this commitment is carried out expeditiously by the Trudeau Liberal government to ensure the voices of the people of Saskatchewan are respected. Conservatives will always be on Saskatchewan’s side.”
