ENGLEFELD β The Village of Englefeld has been in discussions over the past year to sell the Englefeld School building to the Horizon School Division. It is hosting a meeting to gather public feedback.
βCouncil knows the importance of this decision and the stake the community has in the school,β said a notice posted on the villageβs Facebook page. βTherefore, we would like to meet with you to discuss the reasons for the sale, the process we have followed to get to this point and to give you a chance to express your opinion on the sale.β
The meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Another meeting would be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20 if required. Those wanting to attend the meeting must call the village office at 306-287-3151 before 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15 to reserve a seat so pandemic restrictions can be followed.
βThe agreement [with the school division] would ensure that if the school ever closes, we would get the building back for $1,β the notice said. βWhile we would not own the building, we would still maintain a joint use agreement on the gymnasium. Contents in the gymnasium would remain the property of the Village of Englefeld.β
The notice gave three reasons the village is looking at selling the school: the village would no longer have to use municipal taxpayer dollars to maintain and upkeep the school, the Horizon School Division would have more access to government funding for building maintenance, and it would help in moving forward a planned $431,000 renovation thatβs being managed by the school division.
