Community garden for McKitrick School to go ahead

City of North Battleford has voted to authorize administration to work with McKitrick School on developing a community garden. It would be located at the city-owned lot at 1492-101st Street.

City of North Battleford has voted to authorize administration to work with McKitrick School on developing a community garden.

It would be located at the city-owned lot at 1492-101st Street. The city had been approached by Rachel Florence, vice principal from the school, about turning the location into a community garden. The lot is part of the city’s land inventory and listed for $25,000, according to a city memo.

The plan would then be to develop the community garden at the location. The school would manage the space there, which to allow students to learn about how to grow fresh produce.

The city would continue to own the lot but allow it to be used for the community garden. It was noted there has been limited interest expressed in the lot since 2017. The city’s Community Safety Committee would assist with the project and the city’s departments would support it as well.

At a meeting of council Monday, Director of Corporate Services Jennifer Niesink said the city doesn’t see any difficulty making this happen, as other lots that are part of their land inventory have also been turned into community gardens. The vote carried unanimously.
