The city of North Battleford is moving forward in addressing the issues with the Dekker Centre roof.

The city is looking at doing a roof replacement for two sections of the Dekker Center this year and had already issued a request for qualifications for potential contractors back in March. But before they do select a contractor, the city plans to take on a structural engineer to examine the roof before work is done on it.

City manager Randy Patrick said they want to bring in an engineer who 鈥渃an actually make sure we鈥檙e doing the right thing on that roof,鈥 said Patrick, so there are no further problems later on.

Patrick indicated that the issue with the roof is that it is flat and needs to have an angle to it.

Council voted in favor of hiring the engineer, with councillor Kent Lindgren saying it was 鈥渇airly prudent鈥 of the city to do this work, 鈥渃onsidering the history of the CUplex and the challenges that have been faced out there since the beginning of that鈥.

The cost is 鈥渦p to鈥 $30,000, with funding through the gas tax. The hope is to have that hire done 鈥渇airly quickly,鈥 said Patrick, prior to awarding the contract to a contractor.
