For most people, Christmas is a time to gather together, eat turkey dinners and receive gifts.
For others, Christmas can seem a bleak time of year because of the costs associated with the season. They do not have the resources to provide gifts and a large meal for their families.
The Humboldt and District Kinettes help make Christmas a happy time for many families through the Christmas Cheer program.
This year, the Kinettes put together 56 hampers for families on December 18.
"It's been really good," said Tracy Reifferscheid, chair of the event.
"We've had lots of individuals and businesses (donate) for the hampers."
The hampers provide families with a Christmas meal, gifts for the family and other essentials.
Although less was donated for the food portion of the hampers this year, there was still enough to fill all 56.
"If we have a little extra, we usually donate it to the food bank," said Reifferscheid.
IGA in Humboldt helps the Kinettes by putting together the food portion of the hampers.
"It's greatly appreciated because it gives us one less thing to worry about," said Reifferscheid.
Community members do not only donate to the hampers. Many take part in the Adopt-A-Family program.
"Lots of people have been sponsoring and adopting families, which is great," said Reifferscheid.
In the Adopt-A-Family program, volunteers are given children's wish lists to buy gifts fora particular.
Reifferscheid has been surprised by the wish lists of some of the children.
"On a seven-year-old's wish list, it's not toys, it's winter clothes," she said.
Since the Kinettes get a lot of donations, they are still able to give a toy to each child, even if they don't ask for one.
"I think every kid should get a toy for Christmas," said Reifferscheid.
Once the hampers were put together, the Kinettes delivered them to families on December 19.
"Delivery is the favourite part for us," said Reifferscheid.
Reifferscheid is proud of her Christmas Cheer committee and the entire Humboldt community.
"The community rocks. They've been phenomenal," said Reifferscheid.
"Without them, we wouldn't be able to do it."
The Kinettes are not the only people who enjoy Christmas Cheer. Many of the people involved in Adopt-A-Family love to be a part of the initiative.
"For most people, they say the best part is buying the gifts," said Reifferscheid.
"They say it's a great family experience."
