MISTIWASIS FIRST NATION — Two men have been charged with the murder of a Mistawasis First Nation man that occurred in November of 2020.
RCMP have announced that as a result of extensive investigation by the Saskatchewan Major Crime Unit, in collaboration with Yorkton General Investigation Services, Meadow Lake, Shellbrook and Prince Albert Detachments, and in consultation with Crown Prosecution, two males have been arrested and charged in relation to the Nov. 17, 2020, homicide of Troy Watson from Mistawasis First Nation.
Roy Lasas, 21, from Mistawasis First Nation, is charged with second degree murder.
A second male from Mistawasis First Nation has also been charged with second degree murder. He cannot be identified as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act as he was a youth at the time of the offence.
Both individuals have been remanded in custody and were to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Monday, Jan. 10.
The charges stem from an incident on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020. Just before 9 p.m., Shellbrook RCMP received a call to assist local EMS with an unconscious adult male located outside of a residence on the Mistawasis First Nation in Saskatchewan. Thirty-six-year-old Troy Watson was pronounced deceased on the scene by EMS and an autopsy was scheduled.
Police secured the scene and requested additional resources from the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit North (MCU-N), Prince Albert and Tisdale RCMP Forensic Identification Services and the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service to assist with the investigation.
Based on preliminary information received by police and by working in consultation with the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service, the death of the adult male was investigated as a homicide. The Saskatchewan RCMP MCU-N took carriage of the investigation.
