The case against a 19-year-old man charged with second-degree murder, sexual assault and aggravated assault was adjourned in Prince Albert Provincial Court due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nathan Waditaka is charged in connection to the death of Zellall Highway, as well as assault and sexual assault against a 17-year-old girl. He was scheduled to appear on April 15 to speak to the charges.

The charges against Waditaka stem from 2019 when police were called to Wahpeton Dakota Nation Health Centre shortly after midnight on Dec. 26 following a complaint about a girl who was assaulted.

When police arrived they found Highway, 19, suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced deceased by EMS. Waditaka was identified by police as the suspect and he was arrested at a nearby residence. Since Waditaka had injuries, he was taken by EMS to a Prince Albert hospital. The 17-year-old girl was also taken to hospital.

The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime Unit – North, the Saskatchewan Coroners Service and the Saskatchewan RCMP General Investigation Section – Saskatoon, assisted with the investigation.

Waditaka was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on May 25.
