PRINCE ALBERT – A preliminary hearing was set Monday for a woman charged with second-degree murder in the death of 40-year-old Doris Joan Broussie.
The hearing for 28-year-old Francine Jean Ballantyne is scheduled to start on May 4.
Ballantyne is accused of killing Broussie. Prince Albert Police say at about 3:20 a.m. on Aug. 5, 2021, they responded to a business in the 3600 Block of 2nd Avenue West for a report of an assault. Broussie was taken to Victoria Hospital with serious injuries and later transported to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Two days later Broussie was declared deceased by medical staff.
According to an obituary by MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Broussie was living in Prince Albert but was from Black Lake and Uranium City. She left behind two children.
On Facebook, Broussie’s friends and family posted tributes.
“I can still hear (her) laughing and I can see her smile,” said Rolanda S.
“She was such a loving person,” said Marie K.
Ballantyne is also charged with assault with a weapon. A trial on that charge is set for March 2.
Ballantyne, who also goes by the name of Francine Jean McCallum, is also charged with two counts of failing to appear in court, and being at large on a release order and failing to comply with conditions.
The charges against Ballantyne haven’t been proven in court.
