Bridgefest donor pays the toll

Bridgefest 2010 is a little closer to its budget goal with the announcement of a generous donation.

Bridgefest 2010 is a little closer to its budget goal with the announcement of a generous donation.

Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Community Development Corporation donated $25,000 to the Bridgefest Committee July 6, making it the title sponsor for Bridgefest 2010.

Mayor Chris Odishaw, co-chair of the Bridgefest committee, said the sponsorship, besides providing much-needed dollars for the event, is a great opportunity to give back to the community.

"The mandate of Bridgefest, besides being a great day, is to bridge communities, cultures and age groups and build civic pride; those are all the same things that CDC has mandated, so this is a great partnership," said Odishaw.

This announcement comes as the Bridgefest committee is finalizing details of the event, Saturday, Aug. 28. Last year, the cost of hosting Bridgefest was $80,000. To date, just under $50,000 has been raised through cash and in-kind donations, such as use of tents or equipment.

Confirmed performers at the free event include Prism and Eldebrock. Besides the main stage events, which run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., there will also be a family stage featuring acts such as Twink-elle the Clown and Impetus Magic. The family stage will run from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Although parking will be available at the event for a cost of $5, people are encouraged to make use of the free shuttle service, which will have pick-up locations throughout Battleford and North Battleford. The shuttle service will run every half hour until 9 p.m., at which point the shuttle will only take people from the event, until the end of festivities.

The day will kick off with a Fin Island Trail Run at 7 a.m. There is still room for participants in the five, 10 or 21 kilometer run or walk, so make sure to go to finislandrun.weebly.com, and register before July 31 to be entered into the prize draw.

Volunteers are still needed for a variety of positions, anyone interested can call Jane at 445-1717.
