Biweekly garbage pickup idea gets negative feedback

Mayor Ames Leslie notes letters of concern have been received

A possible switch to biweekly garbage pickup has not gained much support from town council.

BATTLEFORD - Mayor Ames Leslie has acknowledged there has been opposition expressed from residents to the idea of switching to biweekly garbage pickup year-round in Battleford.

“I do know that the biweekly garbage pick up suggestion has muddied the waters in our community a little bit,” said Leslie at the council meeting Monday at Town Hall.

Under the current schedule, weekly garbage collection runs May 1 to Oct. 31 and biweekly the rest of the year. The proposal to switch the town to year-round biweekly garbage pickup, in place of the current schedule, was discussed at the Feb. 22 meeting. But the proposal was voted down by council and the issue remains under discussion, with a possibility of reducing weekly pickup from May to the end of August.

At Monday’s council meeting Leslie noted he’s received letters from the public on the issue.

“I do have a couple of letters here from residents who wrote into the mayor, voicing their displeasure about the thought of going biweekly for the whole year. I don’t know if council or anybody else is having those phone calls."

Leslie said it was a “good plan to put it back for more discussion.”
