The City of North Battleford is accepting an apology from five youths who vandalized signs in the city.

The five youths committed the vandalism on the night of Jan. 29. The youths removed road signs from the road. According to public works director Stewart Schafer, the group was "out for a bit of a joyride" and it was during that time they decided to take down two signs, including one near the golf course.

In a signed letter of apology circulated at a Feb. 24 council meeting, the youths accepted responsibility. In the letter they said the incident "has scared us straight. We are actually good kids and in the spur of the moment made a wrong choice. Please forgive us for all the trouble we have caused, and (we) would like the chance to right our wrong, and pay back our debt to our community."

They offered to pay for the signs to be placed back in their locations, or place the signs back in the proper location. Schafer told council Monday the city will replace the signs and the youths will pay for it.

Councillor Ron Crush said he appreciated the letter of apology.

"They've admitted they've done something wrong and they've been accountable," Crush said.
